The main goal of the 2012 Rio+20 Conference is to ensure renewed political commitment to sustainable development in the future. In addition, the conference will not only identify the progress that has been made to-date and the existing gaps in the implementation of the sustainability declarations, it will also address new emerging challenges.
The debates will focus on two main topics:
-
The shift to a green economy as part of sustainable development and the fight against poverty:
A green economy takes the scarcity of natural resources into consideration because more resources may not be consumed than are available. A green economy should also contribute to poverty reduction through economic development. -
The institutional conditions for sustainable development, i.e. governance:
Appropriate national and international management and regulatory systems are necessary to achieve sustainable development in the areas of the environment, economy and society.
