The concept of sustainable development promotes a holistic view of society, the economy and the environment as well as solidarity with future generations and within today’s generation. The Swiss Confederation shows solidarity with people outside Switzerland through the numerous projects carried out in the context of its development cooperation.
SDC commitment in five specific areas
Sustainable development is a key frame of reference for Swiss development cooperation. The SCD is active in five areas to support Switzerland’s contribution to a globalisation that promotes development and is at the same time environmentally friendly and socially responsible:
- Food security: strengthening sustainable smallholder agriculture
- Water: seeking cross-national solutions
- Climate: promoting low-carbon growth
- Prevention: reducing the impact of natural disasters
- Mountains: Strengthening mountain populations and protecting their living environment
